Helping Children and Adolescents through Grief and Loss

Date: 2 May 2024

Online

Although we often equate loss with death, the reality is that children and adolescents experience many other types of loss, such as parental divorce, moving, or having a serious illness. They may also experience loss of opportunities, self-esteem, recognition, or abilities. Each of these primary losses is associated with secondary losses which also need to be addressed. These losses that are experienced in the normal course of growing up have been compounded by the myriad of losses resulting from the COVID 19 pandemic.

Effective grief therapy with young clients must take into consideration how their developmental stage impacts how they react to loss, and interventions must be engaging, and developmentally-appropriate. After some preliminary background on how young clients experience loss, the primary focus of this workshop will be on creative, effective techniques that facilitate grief recovery in children and adolescents.
